3 Tips to Keep Your Goals in Focus This Year

Happy New Year! Can you believe it’s already 2019? I can’t! With each new year comes new goals, promises, and expectations for ourselves. As a small business owner, it’s easy to put pressure on yourself to get more customers, more revenue, etc. More, more, more is often the goal! While more can be a lovely thing, more can also become quite overwhelming. As the owner of four pet grooming locations, I’m often juggling a million things at once! However, if you have the right mindset and surround yourself with an encouraging bunch, you can achieve every single one of your goals! Below are some helpful tips for you to keep your goals in focus this year.

  1. Announce Your Goals from a Mountain!
Okay, I’m not going to make you climb a literal mountain for this one– unless you want to, then go for it! My point here is for you to share your goals with others. Whether you’re just starting out and your goal for the year is to secure a brand image or a retail space, or you’re hoping to open more locations for an already established business…tell those around you! Not only will it make it easier to hold yourself accountable but you may even be surprised at how many folks are willing to help you achieve those goals!
  2. Keep Notes…Literally!
I’ve always been a huge proponent of writing things down…who doesn’t love a desk peppered in sticky notes? Not unlike the idea of telling folks about your goals, it’s helpful to write them down– it makes the goal more tangible. Plus, there’s something about seeing your goals in writing that makes them more real. Whether you keep a journal, calendar, or random scraps of paper, be sure to check in on these goals regularly.
  3. Don’t Get Bogged down by the Big Picture!
As a business owner, it’s never a bad idea to have an idea of the big picture. In fact, it’s a completely necessary thing. However, when you’re setting goals for yourself each year, the big picture can be overwhelming. Focus on small tasks each day that will help you work towards your goal. I certainly didn’t open four pet grooming shops overnight! Each came to life as I accomplished smaller goals throughout the years– and you can do the same!

Goals can be a great way to move forward as a business owner– just don’t give up on yourself! As the year goes on, keep the above tips in mind and you’ll be sure to find success. You may hit some bumps in the road– but that comes with being a business owner! If you’re passionate about something, you’ll learn to make it work. I wish you the best of luck with your goals for 2019!
